Several U.S. chemical companies plan to lay off employees and reduce costs

Entering the new year, global chemical companies are facing slowing economic growth, declining demand and oversupply of major products. According to the chemical industry situation and outlook report released by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) at the end of 2022, the strong growth momentum of the U.S. market in the first half of 2022 has faded, with inventories in many export and end markets high and growth prospects weak.

ACC economists expect U.S. chemicals production to fall 1.2% in 2023 after growing 3.9% last year. Affected by this, many chemical companies in the United States have announced layoffs and cost reduction measures to cope with the adverse market environment. ACC Chief Economist Martha Moore said: “The end of 2022 saw significant challenges emerge for the global economy, creating headwinds for chemical producers. Soaring inflation has led to aggressive central bank action and is slowing growth in the U.S. and abroad. Economic Growth.”

oekotex issues ban to protect leather and footwear products

ecological safety of products

American manufacturer Milliken announced at the end of last year that it had stopped using PFAS in textile finishing agents and fiber products, and 3M, a well-known international chemical company, also stated that it would phase out the production and use of PFAS by the end of 2025. Considering the negative impact of PFAS on the ecological environment, many states in the United States have also introduced new regulations to strengthen the supervision of PFAS.

As a widely recognized and authoritative textile industry standard in the world, oekotex’s 2023 new regulations propose a comprehensive ban on the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS/PFC) in textiles, leather and footwear products to ensure that consumer to ensure worker safety and help the textile industry implement social responsibilities.

PFAS is called a permanent chemical that is not easily decomposed naturally, has a great impact on the environment, and accumulates in the human body, negatively affecting human health, and may ultimately affect the reproductive system, development, immune system, and cancer. Therefore, oekotex has updated the limit value of PFAS in the standard goals of STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD and ECO PASSPORT certification, and stipulated that the limit value of the total organic fluorine content derived from PFAS is 10mg/kg. Through strict testing requirements for PFAS, the exposure of this substance to the environment, workers and consumers can be reduced to a certain extent.
